If we can't come up with top 10 ways to manage stress, then our priorities in the area of
self improvement need readjusting.
As somebody who happens to be around a lot of personal development adherents,
I hear enough of this (in varied versions): "There is no such thing as stress". "Stress is
a phantom of our own creation." I try not to dismiss them as personal development snobs.
Because the fact is I agree with the metaphysical meaning of those statements.

The reality of today's
life however is that people ARE looking for ways to manage stress. If everything were perfect, then
we would surely not manufacture stress because we would be perfect at living the Truth that
"we create our own reality". And who would be stupid enough to create stress? But the truth is, people DO
create stress; Whether knowingly or mindlessly, is a different discussion.

Even if stress serves its own dysfunctional purpose, most people are smart enough
to realize they do not want to be stressed for too long, as
they start to value other things more than the stress they've created. So once you've decided that your stress
needs to be calmed down, what do you turn to? I've outlined what I have discovered, through my own personal used-to-be
chaotic life, and by observing other very proactive stress managers.

In no particular order:

1. Planning or time management

As the top Personal development teacher Jim Rohn likes to say, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail".
Very few things happen to us by surprise. Most things that end up stressing us could have been
avoided if we'd carefully planned our time well in advance. On paper. Maintaining a daily/weekly planner
sounds unattractive and mundane, but is the best thing you could do to avoid becoming overwhelmed with
workloads. And, this leads us to the next best invention since sliced bread.

2. Outsource, outsource, outsource.

The 4-hour Work Week author Timothy Ferris puts it best, "what is it costing you
financially, emotionally and physically to postpone action? Don't only evaluate the potential
downside of action. It is equally as important to measure the atrocious cost of inaction". I dislike cleaning and organizing my house.
I used to procrastinate doing it, and felt "badly" every time I remembered I was procrastinating that area of my life.
So now I have a friend come over and do it for me. I forgo eating
out at expensive restaurants so I can afford to pay her.
So, what frivolous things are you spending money on (including those shoes
and that jewelry and those boytoys you keep buying) that you could give up in order to pay somebody to do what you hate doing?
Why fill yourself with self-hatred every time you see your unorganized house, your lawn that needed mowing 2 weeks ago, your
bookkeeping that hasn't been touch in 9 months?

3. Eat right

Another of what I use as my top 10 ways to manage stress is feeding my body right: right food, rightly. I'm one
of those hypoglycemic people, so if I allow myself to get too hungry, I'll definitely be too angry. As well, eating the wrong
foods, such as too much refined foods, irritates not only my GI tract, but also my moods.

4. Exercise eg. yoga, running

I aim to do at least an hour a day, 5-6 days a week, in the gym. When I fall off my exercise regimen, especially if I don't
exercise at all for a week or more straight, I feel my stress levels rising. Scientific backing has it that exercising
produces endorphins -- brain chemicals that produce overall feelings of euphoria. Exercises such as yoga also help in
causing one to calm the mind, focus internally and become centered.

5. Relaxing music

Instead of blasting the TV with incredibly negative news that skew my view of the world and cause me
even more irritation, I like to sometimes just put on calming relaxing music and let it play in the background.

6. Laughter

Every night I tape a comedy show that I know I can watch whenever I need a dose of laughter.
Laughter is our body's built in stress-buster. Laughter has even been documented to
lower blood pressure. In his book, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious,
Sigmund Freud describes laughter
as the body's way of safely releasing anxiety, aggression, fear, and anger. Researchers tell
us that laughing decreases stress hormones including adrenaline, cortisol, epinephrine,
dopac, and the growth hormone allowing them to return to normal levels. These stress
hormones constrict blood vessels causing high blood pressure and heart problems.

7. Massage

Most people do not realize that when we stress out, the stress localizes in certain areas of our body.
Next time you feel yourself getting angry, agitated or frustrated, take the time to observe what area of your
body is experiencing the sensation. For most of us, its the neck, shoulder, back etc. Physical stress
will also cause certain areas of our bodies to tense up. An outstanding, professional massage therapist
will easily identify what areas of your body feel tense and tight. They will then be able
to work their magic fingers to help relieve tension in those areas. A good one hour professional massage is a gift I give
myself every couple of weeks.

8.Unwind drive/bike away

Another of my favorite top 10 ways to manage stress is to just get away from it all.
Many people I know will get in the car and just take a drive down the highway, take a bike ride, or even take a weekend country-drive
as a way to de-stress.

9. Meditate

Of the most useful top 10 ways to manage stress, meditation is hands down the most effective I've used. Whatever it is
that meditation does to the body, only people who meditate regularly know. Regular meditation, at least 15 minutes twice
a day not only helps me feel extremely happy most of the time, it helps my creative juices flow with ease. I feel incredibly
spiritually nourished.

10.Time out/Nap/Sleep

And the last of my top 10 ways to manage stress...........Go to bed!
I once read from a self improvement teacher that, you want to always rest before you get tired. Well, most of us
don't do it, or feel that we can't afford to do it. But what's worse is that most people won't even rest WHEN they are
stressed out and tired. They just keep on going. But over time they'll get overwhelmed, burned out and perhaps crush and burn.

Taking a time out can be invaluable; whether that is by taking a nap or a long bath, or reading an enjoyable novel, or just giving oneself a

  3. Set a block of time for some specific tasks each day. Determine how long will you work on each task and how long will you take a break. An example would be: a 45 minutes work time and a ten minutes break after that. It is crucial that you stick to the timetable. It might be difficult in the beginning, but after a while it will get better.
  4. Identify which task is more important to achieving your goal. Do the most important task first.
  5. Delegate tasks to someone else who has the time and the expertise. Do not become jack of all trades. Do things that you like and are good at. Get someone else to things you dislike, as long as it is within your budget.
  6. Keep everything organized. How often have you wasted your time finding something you need but could not find just because your desk was so disorganized?
  7. If there is a big project, slice it into chunks so that you will not be overwhelmed by the size of the project.
  8. Write down the pros and cons of why you should or should not do what is on the list. This will enable you to remove unnecessary task from your list.
  9. Don't over commit. Learn to say *No*.
  10. Don't procrastinate. Just do it.
  11. Deal effectively with interruptions. Schedule a time when you will only do the task you set out to do without being sidetrack by interruptions.
  12. Reward yourself when you accomplish the task you set out to do.

These are just some steps you can take to manage your time effectively. If you follow the steps outlined above for a period of at least thirty days, it would eventually be come habitual. It might seem difficult at first, but after thirty days it would become quite natural.

The good news is that you can follow a tried and tested strategy to help you focus and pass the exam. Remember that each question are not equal. Some will be easier to answer than the rest. You can leverage on this little tip using a multiple passes strategy. Your goal would be to go through the exam 3 times. First pass you answer all the easy questions, second pass the medium difficulty questions, then the last pass the truly difficult ones.

Because they're all multiple choice answers, they actually carry the same weight even though the effort to answer them varies. A common mistake that students or exam takers make is to waste too much time on a difficult question at the beginning, thus depriving themselves of easier questions at the end.

Rate the questions according to difficulty

While you're going through the questions in the CPC exam booklet on your first pass, keep track of the question's difficulty with a simple mark. You can put for example, a dot next to questions that are of medium difficulty, and two dots next to really difficult questions. So on your second pass just focus on the single dot questions, and on your third pass the double dot questions. This will save you a lot of time on your second pass and third pass. There is no need to over think it, just go by your gut feeling so you don't end up spending too much time rating the questions.

Track your time and progress and keep moving

There are 150 questions you need to answer in 5 hours and 40 minutes. Your CPC exam answer grid have 5 columns containing 30 questions each. Allow yourself one hour for each column, which leaves some time at the end for review. You can request the proctor to announce as each hour elapses to remind yourself of progress. Don't be afraid to skip questions that may take a lot of time so that you can keep moving forward.

Don't leave any CPC exam questions unanswered

When the CPC exam time is almost up, use the last few minutes to guess at an answer for the unanswered questions. There are only 4 choices, which gives you a 25% chance of getting it right. Make an educated guess and you can bump up your chances to 50/50. Usually there will be one obvious wrong answer, so make sure you use all the remaining time to make educated guesses.

The best way to do well with these strategies is to practice. The experience of taking the CPC exam is very different from doing it in your home or participating in online sample exams. • An ethics officer who ideally should be a senior executive but not from HR or the Legal Department. He or she must be trained in matters of ethics in the workplace and have ultimate responsibility for managing the program.
• Demonstrated involvement and support of top management. Staff and Board must see that senior management takes ethical conduct seriously.

8. Identify and model industry benchmarks.

Middle management is a difficult place to occupy. It is often the place where careers are either broken or made. In fact, many business professionals find middle management roles more difficult than entry level or senior level management positions. The middle manager is not really in charge of setting direction and whatever direction is set must be done by working through others. It makes perfect sense why this role is difficult! Being a middle manager is difficult, but it is not an impossible role, however.

The first step a middle manager must take to be effective is to understand that this role requires more emphasis on other skills than the manager has used at the entry level. Specifically, the technical skills that were instrumental in her promotion are less important to her at this higher level. She must excel in her interpersonal and big picture (conceptual) skills to succeed. Her communication, judgment, conflict resolution, decision making, delegation, planning, and analytical skills are more important at this level than her technical skills. Her success as a middle manager is tied to her ability to influence and collaborate with others at all levels of the organization. If she tries to get by on her superior technical skills alone, she will set herself up for failure.

The second step a middle manager must take to be effective is to improve his interpersonal and conceptual skills. Unless this area is addressed, he will lack the proper planning, problem solving, analytical, and judgment skills to work at this level in the organization. The best methods for improving interpersonal and conceptual skills are continuing education and mentorship. Taking high quality management seminars, attending quality internal training, doing volunteer work, and joining a professional association are all viable continuing education methods. The middle manager should also find a mentor whom he respects to serve as a resource to him. Many times making the request of a higher level manager who has shown interest in his success is all that it takes. This individual should not be his boss, however. Boss and mentor roles can conflict!

The third step a middle manager must take to be effective is to find reliable sources for ongoing feedback on her performance. A 360 degree review is preferable. The key is to identify individuals who will provide the manager with honest feedback and who do not have their own political agenda. Of course, the better the relationship with her boss, the better the feedback is generally.

Often, the best source of feedback for a middle manager is the managers she directs, however. This does not happen easily. First, she must create a no-penalty environment where her direct reports are free to give feedback to her. This means she must be prepared to hear some frank feedback from her direct reports, act on it appropriately without emotion, and not penalize her managers for what they had to say. After several instances of this behavior, the middle manager will start building credibility with her managers. She will find they appreciate her giving them a voice in the operations. And, her direct reports will likely begin to look out for her best interests as well.

The first level manager who is promoted to a middle manager must realize that the skills that brought him success in his former role are less critical at this higher level. Next, through education and mentorship, he must develop his interpersonal and conceptual skills which are more critical to his success. Finally, the middle manager must embrace 360 degree feedback. By taking these three steps, the middle manager can improve his chances of being successful in this difficult role.

One aspect of project management that used to receive quite a bit of attention in the 1950s and 1960s was the project organizational structures. A myriad of new organizational structures have appeared on the scene in the last couple of decades but they still lack many of the desirable qualities in the traditional methods. Ultimately, project management directors seek organizational methods that facilitate teamwork, can maximize the use of limited resources, efficiency and quality in the way a project is completed and how goals and objectives are achieved. This article will examine the three main traditional organizational structures for project management. These three structures are functional organization, project organization and matrix organization.

Functional Organization This structure is by far the oldest of the organizational methods but remains one of the most successful. This method performs best when used for routine work functions and the upholding of quality and work standards. Functional Organization structures assign projects in two different ways. One way involves the project being assigned to a specific functional manager who then coordinates with the other departments for them to each contribute. Alternatively, projects can be shuffled around to different departments where each department manager ensures that their parts of the work have been completed.

This method does not work very effectively when used in facilitating complex projects. One of the major criticisms of this organizational structure is the lack of built-in employee recognition, measurement and reward for project performance. Similarly, there is very little individual accountability for any project management tasks that need to be performed.

Project Organization Project Organization is a structure that is specifically designed for executing projects. It is specifically tailored to meet the demands of complex projects by isolating unique work and maintaining a strong focus on completing the project. Once the project is completed, this structure disbands. This structure is effective in maintaining dedicated resources throughout the life of the project.

The major criticism of this structure is that it is inefficient in transferring technology and the use of resources. Also, by the time the members actually begin acting as a cohesive team, the project is over and the organization dissolves. Since this project has dedicated resources throughout its life, major inefficiency ensues when there are underutilized employees during certain parts of the project.

Matrix Organization Matrix Organization is a project management structure that evolved from the recognition of inherent flaws in the Functional Organization and Project Organization structures. Created in the 1970s, this structure combined the best components of these two structures. This model functions very well when there are multiple projects being coordinated at once. The functional managers oversee the staffing, training, job assignment and evaluation of the project's personnel. The functional specialists are assigned one or more projects and oversee that these individualized projects' achieve their objectives are completed through maximum resource efficiency.

Despite its recognition and avoidance of the flaws involved in other structure, Matrix Organization still does have some problems of its own. Individual employees report to at least two managers which can often lead to ambiguity and conflict. These problems can be avoided through good communication and solid leadership between managers.

This article simply provided an overview of several project management organizational structures. Functional Organization, Project Organization and Matrix Organization are the three most traditional project management structures that are still used today because of their effectiveness. However, do keep in mind that there are plenty of other methods available that may better suit your firm's situation. Nevertheless, the type of organizational structure that should be chosen by your firm depends on the type of project as well as the objectives and goals that it ultimately aims to achieve.
